Gowns for Women: Party Wear, Evening, Ball and Bridal Gowns

A gown is a long, formal dress, usually floor or ankle length, made for parties, evenings and celebrations. Whether you're dressing for a cocktail night, a reception or a wedding, the right gown for women feels elegant, moves beautifully and photographs well. Coyu's gown edit brings every style together in one place: party wear gowns, long evening gowns, ball gowns, bridal gowns and ethnic gowns such as saree gowns and lehenga gowns, from leading Indian and international labels. Most styles are in crepe, georgette, satin, silk and net, often with sequins, embroidery, drapes or a cape.

Gown vs dress: what's the difference?

Every gown is a dress, but not every dress is a gown. A gown is longer, usually reaching the ankle or floor, and more formal, with richer fabrics, fuller skirts or structured bodices. A dress can be any length, from mini to maxi, and is often more casual. If you want something long but relaxed, see our maxi dresses.

Gowns for women and girls

From a simple gown for girls heading to a college party to a heavy embellished gown for a wedding, there's a style for every age and occasion. You'll also see the word spelled "gaun", but whatever you call it, look for a cut that suits the event: a flowing silhouette for dancing, a fitted one for a sleek evening look, or a full skirt for real drama.

Party wear gowns

Party wear gowns are made to stand out: sequinned and shimmer fabrics, one-shoulder and off-shoulder necklines, thigh slits and corset bodices. Ladies party wear gowns in black, red, gold and jewel tones look striking at night, while pastels suit day parties. For shorter party styles, browse party dresses.

Long and evening gowns

A long gown for women is the classic choice for a formal evening: floor-length, fluid and elegant. Evening gowns are usually simpler in shape and rely on fabric and fit, such as a satin slip gown, a crepe column gown or a draped georgette gown. Full-sleeve and high-neck styles feel more formal and suit winter evenings; sleeveless, halter and V-neck styles feel lighter. For more evening looks, see Evening Glam.

Ball gowns

A ball gown has a fitted bodice and a full, flared skirt, often with layers of net or tulle underneath. It's the most dramatic gown silhouette, made for grand receptions, gala evenings and a bride's big entrance. Ball gowns for women look best with a defined waist and a simple neckline, so the skirt does the talking.

Bridal and wedding gowns

Bridal gowns are a popular choice for the bride's engagement, cocktail or reception, when she wants something different from her wedding-day lehenga or saree. Look for heavy embellishment, rich embroidery, a long train or a sheer cape. Guests can wear a gown for a wedding too, usually at the evening functions; for the pheras, most families prefer a saree, lehenga or kurta set. For the full wedding wardrobe, see the Wedding Edit.

Ethnic and Indian gowns

Ethnic gowns combine a gown shape with Indian craft such as zari, gota, mirror work or embroidery. A saree gown is pre-draped, so it gives the look of a saree with the ease of a gown; browse sarees for more drapes. A lehenga gown has the flare of a lehenga in a single piece; see lehenga sets. Gowns with a jacket, cape or koti add a layer of embroidery and work well for winter weddings. For fusion gowns, see Indo-western dresses, and for two-piece alternatives, co-ord sets.

Gowns by occasion

Engagement: Many brides and guests choose a gown for the ring ceremony. See engagement dresses.

Cocktail: Sleek, sequinned and bold. See cocktail dresses.

Sangeet: Choose a flowy gown you can dance in. See sangeet outfits.

Reception: The most formal evening, made for embellished gowns. See reception outfits.

Haldi: A light yellow gown works for a modern or poolside haldi. See haldi dresses.

Colours and fabrics

A black gown is the most versatile choice, from cocktails to formal dinners. Blue, green and pink are popular for weddings and parties, red and wine look rich at night, and gold and metallic gowns add shine. Ivory, peach and pastels feel soft and romantic for day events and brides.

Simple or heavy?

A simple gown for women in a solid colour and a clean cut suits dinners, day events and smaller parties, and is easy to restyle. A heavy gown with sequins, embroidery or a cape is best kept for receptions, cocktails and bridal looks. If you're unsure, pick a simple silhouette in a rich fabric and let your jewellery add the drama.

How to style a gown

Jewellery: Statement earrings with off-shoulder and strapless necklines; a choker or delicate necklace with V-necks; skip a necklace with high necks.

Footwear: Heels or platforms to keep a floor-length hem off the ground; embellished flats for long events.

Layers: A cape, jacket or shawl for winter evenings.

Bag: A small clutch or potli keeps the look clean.

Labels in the gown edit

Some of the widest gown ranges come from Dash and Dot, House of Fett, Aakaar, Studio Surbhi, Edition II, Paulmi and Harsh, Ewoke Studio, Qunic and Pleats by Aruni.

Gown FAQs

What is the difference between a gown and a dress? A gown is a long, formal dress, usually floor or ankle length, in richer fabrics. A dress can be any length and is often more casual.

What are the different types of gowns? The main types are party wear, evening, ball, bridal and ethnic gowns, plus styles like draped, cape, corset and jacket gowns.

Which gown should I wear to a party, an evening event or a wedding? For a party, a sequinned or one-shoulder gown. For an evening event, a sleek satin or crepe gown. For a wedding, an embellished or ethnic gown at the engagement, cocktail or reception.

How do I style a gown? Match jewellery to the neckline, wear heels to keep the hem off the floor, and add a cape, jacket or shawl for winter.

Are there Indian gowns, like saree gowns and lehenga gowns? Yes. Ethnic gowns use Indian craft in a gown shape: a saree gown is pre-draped, and a lehenga gown has a lehenga's flare in one piece.

Can I try gowns in a Coyu store before buying? Yes. Visit any of our 15 Coyu stores across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana and Chandigarh. Availability varies by store, so check with the store before you visit.
